Class in progress Office of Technology Licensing: Technology transfer at Stony Brook has a history dating back to 1978. With passage of the Bayh-Dole legislation in 1980, facilitating university ownership of intellectual property resulting from federally sponsored programs, the growth of Stony Brook technology transfer activities has been steady and quite naturally parallels the increase in sponsored research. Stony Brook treats technology transfer as a natural outgrowth of basic research.

Between the years 1978 and 2004:

  • 851 invention disclosures had been received and processed by the OTLIR from
  • over 547 different faculty, students, fellows and staff in more than
  • 97 different departments, divisions, and centers on the Stony Brook campus.
  • 678 separate patent applications based on these disclosures were filed, and
  • 363 patents were issued, of which 243 are U.S. Patents.

As part of the process to commercialize and “bring to market” the disclosed technologies, 333 license agreements have been negotiated and executed; of these, over 80% are still active. Historically, approximately 40% of Stony Brook’s technologies have been licensed and Stony Brook accounts for almost 65% of the licenses in all of SUNY.
